5 Ways to Fight Postpartum Depression

I want to talk to you about a subject that is not always an easy one, but something I, myself, am dealing with right now. Postpartum depression, or “baby blues”, is something so many of us are dealing with but not many people like to talk about. I recently had my second child and having been through it before with my first child,  I seem to have a better handle on what is going on this time. I’m not sure about how it affects everyone,  but I seem to be very emotional, which is quite unusual for me. I have found five ways that help get me through this trying time and want to share with you in the hope that they may help you as well.

Pamper Yourself  Take time for yourself, get out of the house and get a massage, get your nails done, meet a friend for coffee, or maybe it is just soaking in a nice, long bath.  It’s important to take time for yourself, I know at times it may seem hard to do, but making time for something just for you will give you peace of mind and help you recharge.

Sleep — Sleep all you can, while your baby/children are sleeping you need to do the same. Don’t feel guilty for getting your sleep while you can, all the other things can wait.  I can tell you sometimes it is only 8:00 pm and I am in bed, sleep does wonders for your mood and your ability to get through the trying times.

Healthy Diet — Make sure you are eating a healthy diet, along with taking a good multivitamin. It’s sometimes hard to get all our nutrition through food, a good meal replacement shake that is packed with dense nutrition and vitamins can help fill the voids where your nutrition may be lacking. The better you eat the better you are going to feel.

Prayer — Now you may have different views on this than I, but I assure you that it works for me. I sometimes sing worship songs out loud to help calm myself and it seems to work on the kiddos as well. Remember not all prayers are answered in the way we think, but they are always answered.

Workout/Exercise — Get some exercise, whether it is in a gym, your garage, or just get outside for a walk.

Hope these suggestions help you as they have helped me on this journey.  We need to share with one another the struggles and the triumphs of this journey of motherhood.   I encourage you to share with anyone that may be experiencing some of these feelings.
